She’s going to be an “outside girl”

by kristas on September 2, 2010

I have a confession to make:  I’m not an “outside” person.  Don’t get me wrong, I love those first few days of spring and summer that are sunny and warm.  I love going outside for an hour or two in the afternoons and hanging out at the pool.  I love walking around fall festivals in jeans and sweaters when the sun is shining but the air is crisp.

But? I’m not someone who can, or wants, to be outside all day. My husband?  He is a bit of a sun slut.  If he could get away with it, he’d be outside at the pool from 10AM until 6PM every day.  At the beach, that’s pretty much exactly what he does.  Me, on the other hand?  I retreat to the couch for an afternoon nap under a blanket.  Where I’m not hot, sweaty, sticky and sandy.   Because if I’m hot, sweaty and sticky it better be from a workout that burned enough calories so I can have that piece of cheesecake.

To further make my point, rainy Sunday afternoons are my favorite thing. EVER.

The child?  She apparently is going to be like her father and between the two of them, I see my afternoons on the couch coming to a rather rapid end.

OMG, do you SEE those handprints on my door??

At least three times a day, she stands at the door and pounds on it.  POUNDS.  With her tiny little palms slapping the glass and her little mouth running a mile a minute as she squeals, giggles and babbles at anything she sees.  “GA- GA-GA!” she yells.  After a few minutes, her squeals turn into little whines.  Then to even louder whines.  A few minutes after that, if I’m not lathering her with sunscreen and gathering up toys, she turns on the water works.

So, outside we go.  Where she carefully places leaves in her tiny tea cups and investigates the stones and pebbles around the trees.  Inside, she is constantly moving.  From this toy to that book to walking around and around the chair.  Outside, she is content, curious and calm.  She laughs at the birds, waves to her PapPap and gets brave and stands to feel the grass between her toes.

She’s such a joy to watch as she discovers new things.  Even though it means one more way that she’s Daddy’s girl and a few more sweaty afternoons for me.

Does sitting outside with my girl earn me cheesecake?

Your little girl might be my twins’ long lost sister! They are not happy if we’re not outside! Don’t they know I have stuff inside that I need to do?! There’s only so much outside I can handle!

I’m with you, I’m definitely not the outdoorsy type! But Hailey, she looooves to go outside. Seriously, when she is getting fussy, I can walk outside with her and she calms down! I have no clue where she gets this from. The hubs isn’t exactly Mr. Outdoors either.

Ryann’s favorite thing outside is grass. I wish we could explore more outside, but between surface of the sun heat and fire ant infested grass, it’s just not safe. I love being outside, I’ll take C for you, while you bake us cheesecake and we’ll enjoy cheesecake after our exploring.

I think you deserve double cheesecake with cherries on top :-)

She’s a real cutie.

u crack me up!

(But, seriously, I live in Montana, where everyone gets all buggered up and excited to be outside ALL THE TIME, yet, me, well…not so much!)

Darling little thing making hand prints, btw…

Ahhhh you know what I love? – I LOVE watching life through a child’s eyes! So many beautiful things that we are just too darn busy to enjoy. There is always something to be done. But when an 11 month old giggles because the tree she is sitting under is dropping leaves on her blanket – it just makes my day!

Sitting outside DEFINITELY earns you some cheesecake!

I’m totally with you, too. I would much rather be inside curled up on the couch with a good book and a glass of wine. But my husband and kids? They would live outside if I would let them.

I don’t like being outside, either, unless it’s early spring or cool fall. Sebastian, on the other hand, loves it. If we had a flat yard for him to play in, I would go outside in the heat with him, but I will not pack up his stuff and drive to the park just to get sweaty & miserable.

I am so not an outside girl either!! Your paragraph about how/when you enjoy your outtime (especially the crisp fall day), and about retreating inside (nap insdie while at the beach…of course!!!) are describing me to a T. And the idea of camping is pure hell to me…even though I’ve never actually been.

But we live in the country and have lots of space to run around, so I am sure that when R starts walking (running), he’ll be a country boy who wants to be outside sun up till sun down. We’ll make it work…maybe he’ll teach me to love the outdoors a little more.

I am not much of an outside girl either. I am happy to be out there but if it is too hot or super buggy, I am outta there.
I say let Daddy and daughter go bond while you catch a nap:)

Im with you- I prefer being inside on the couch playing with my daughter while trashy tv is on the background- its educational since I point out that she should NEVER act like that when she grows up. You deserve cheesecake with a side of ice cream and chocolate cake.

OMG. I am a total sun slut. I hate that I am because when I turn 40 I’m going to look leatherier (not a word but who cares) than the cript keeper. I’m serious. I could just lay there like a vegetable and roast to perfection. It’s a sick addiction. It also doesn’t help that my son LOVES it outside too. Don’t worry though, he is slathered religiously with sunblock and wears hats. I on the other hand…set a very bad example of what you shouldn’t do. At least I don’t drink in front of him…oh wait…errr. I know, I suck.

LOL!! I think ALL little kids are that way!! I live on the third floor of an apartment complex with no elevator. I would happily spend a couple of days not.going.anywhere. Lulu will have none of it! She LOVES the out doors! If I don’t take her outside she gets crabby and busy and into absolutely EVERYTHING. I feel ya on this one!
