The week that football preseason starts is always a tough week for me. I get pretty used to having Craig around in the evenings and weekends throughout the year and the second week of August everything changes. For a few weeks, until the routine of the regular season starts, he puts in obscenely long hours.
(although, side note – for the six years that we dated he put in obscenely long hours and late nights all. season. long. By obscenely long, I mean most of the time it was rare for him to be home before 11PM, and he started every day at 5:30. Dedicated is not the right word. Then, last fall, when C was born and stole her father’s heart right before my very eyes, he started coming home early in the evening. Did he all of a sudden get more time efficient? I think not. But anyway… I digress.)
What I was saying, is that this week is always a little bit of a shock to my system as I wonder what to do with myself now that my husband’s not around to entertain me. So, instead of whining about football season, especially since I know this one is harder on Craig than it is on me, I thought I’d write about the things I love about fall.
- Jeans & sweatshirts
- Football games - I’m partial to high school & college. Something about the crowds, the bands, the “they are just kids and not paid professionals” of it. And as much as I complain about football season sometimes, I really love going to Craig’s games. I love getting to know the kids on his teams, watching them on the field, jumping up and down when they make good plays and joining in the disappointment of the “team family” when they lose.
- Cool mornings, warm afternoons and chilly evenings
- C’s birthday
- Back to school shopping sales (no, it does not matter that I’m not in school.)
- Pulling out the boots and not having to paint my toes anymore
- MY BIRTHDAY!!!
- Turning on the fireplace
- The color of the changing leaves
- Fall festivals with their apple dumplings & pumpkin rolls & hot chocolate
For me, fall is the best time of year. Summer, with the hot, humid, sticky weather and the mile-long list of things to do makes me want to run inside and curl up under a soft blanket in the air conditioning. Winter, just sucks. And we don’t get much of a spring. So, while I hate going to bed before my husband gets home, in just a few weeks, I’ll be in my jeans & sweatshirt, at one of games, drinking hot chocolate and introducing C to the excitement of high school football. And in that moment, all will be right with the world.

I have a love-hate relationship with fall too. It means back-to-school for my teacher husband which means an insanse few weeks/months for him. Which also means I have lost my house keeper/cook/day care.
But, I do love fires in our fireplace, cute jeans with boots, sweaters and more warm, home-style meals.
I’m sure its hard but I LOVE your list. Fall is my favorite time of year too. Jeans, sweatshirts & boots- My FAV. Clint and I still try to make 1 or 2 high school football games each year because we love it so much. And the smell of cinnamon and ginger in my mini crock pot. LOVE.
first of all what does your husband do that involves football? or he just watches it alot? Im confused.
I too love fall more than anything else, especially now that I am not teaching and I dont have to go back to work
I miss the fall. Our seasons are much out here in California. Enjoy your sweatshirt!!!
Hmmm I agree, I love fall. As much as I love summer and the longer days, there is just something about fall. The beauty, the smell, the coziness, – just love it.
Fall is my favorite, especially here in New England. Unfortunately, we haven’t had a single fall-ish moment yet, just 90+ degree days. I cannot WAIT to wear long sweater, leggings and boots – the most comfortable maternity clothes ever.
ahh! fall is my favorite time of the year too. i abso-freakin-lutely LUUUURRRRVVVVE it. and i love football season. and your list.
when we were in hawaii, we totally missed out on the fall/football/hot cider and hayrides experience and i missed it so much!
Love your list and would respectfully add cider mills to it
I thoroughly agree that non-professional sports are the best kind! There seems to be so much more of a team atmosphere on high school and college teams.
I do miss seasons…we don’t see much more than just summer down here in FL!
I love fall! I too love pulling out my jeans again or finally being able to curl up on the couch with a warm blanket. There is something about the chilly mornings that make me home sick. I grew up in Upstate NY and falls are amazing there. When we start to get that fall weather here in Oregon, my heart aches to be back east with all the beautiful colors.
We still have till about October before it will start cooling down, so fall is a wee bit off for me. However, this is the first September that I am not going back to school as a teacher (my son was born in January last year). It is weird not to be focused on the latest deals at the office supply stores or on getting my work wardrobe back together. I am thinking that I need to start some new fall traditions so that I don’t miss heading back to work so much (because really? I don’t miss it at all). Maybe instead of spring cleaning I will institute a fall cleaning ritual??
I love, love, love fall. It is by far the best the best time of year. And despite always anxiously looking forward to summer, I find that the minute it hits 85 degrees, I’m over it and ready for fall. I love that crisp cool weather before the need for a puffy coat arises.
And reading your post totally makes me miss the days when my dad was a high school football coach. As the head coach, he too had long days and a distracted brain until December, but I loved Friday nights sitting in the stadium, cheering on those boys. I loved high school football. I miss it!
This post made me jealous. I grew up in the Midwest where there were amazing crisp falls. Now I live in the South where fall simply doesn’t exist. I miss it but it’s the price I pay for not having to shovel snow!
I agree that Fall is the BEST time of the year. The weather is perfect and the bugs are dying. But it’s so hard to think about it yet with the weather being so hot. Hopefully it will cool off early this year.
What a lovely way to look at this. I’m a football widow too. My hubby drives 6 hours one way to all of the home games at his college alma mater. Basically, he’s gone most weekends in the fall. That’s been tough, but the kids are getting older. I look forward to a time when he’ll take one with him.
