The countdown to walking has begun

by kristas on June 21, 2010

Friday morning, I was home from work, sipping a cup of tea on the couch.  Minding my own business as C crawled on the floor at my feet.  The next thing I knew, I saw her place her tiny little hand on the couch.  I reached down, brushed her hair to the side and kissed her on the head.

Then, something caught my attention.  Her face had a determined look. She scootched to her knees and looked at me.

“I’m coming up there, Momma,” she said with her eyes and pursed lips.

I watched her curl her toes under, grip the couch and come up on one knee.

“You little shit,” I thought to myself (with love of course).  Out loud, I chuckled and said, “Do you think you’re gonna pull yourself up here, punkin?”

She pulled up with her hands and pushed off with her toes, that determined look on her face the entire time. Slowly, she raised herself up.  She was STANDING.  All by herself.  Once she got to her feet, her legs still shaking, she looked at me and her face broke into a million watt grin.

And then she fell down.

But she was still grinning with a huge sense of accomplishment in her eyes.

We had quite a few “all fall downs” this weekend as she got a little bit more stable on her feet. But by Sunday evening, just a few short days after she pulled herself up the first time, she was taking timid steps around the furniture, letting go with one hand to reach for something further back on the couch and pulling herself up on the couch and turning around to hold onto the coffee table.

Please send wine.  For I am not ready for this.

ppsst… just a sidenote that as I contemplate this new stage in parenthood, the folks at Top Baby Blogs have reset the count and everybody went back to zero.  You can vote once a day with two little clicks.  Obviously, I don’t expect you to vote every day, but if you’re reading this and could spare a second to click over to TBB and rack up a vote for me, so I can stay on the radar screen of people who are looking for baby blogs, I would be super appreciative.

Aw! I love the little peek over the couch! My boy just started scooting this weekend. I lay him on his blanket, go get a drink, and come back to find him across the room. Looks like some rearranging of furniture is in order!

Oh boy – and the real fun is about to begin! Lots of bumps and bruises coming too, but gotta love that determination (I think I can, I think I can!)

The fun is just beginning! What a cutie! Hopefully she’s not too much of a daredevil. :)

Your daughter is adorable! And mine is pointing at her pictures on the computer screen right now and smiling.

All I can say is, I feel your pain. My DD is 18 months old and attempting to climb up EVERYTHING, including walls. I am a SAHM and spend my days completely frazzled. My hubby and I were just marveling this morning that we haven’t had to make a trip to the ER.

As a mom, are we ever ready for the next stage of development? There’s no way to really prepare for it. They grow so fast. And each new milestone brings its own worries. Just try to share in her joy and pride as she masters her new skills. Falls will happen. Bumps and bruises will happen. And miraculously, she (and you) will survive!

You won’t need wine; you’ll need coffee, lots and lots of coffee! My son’s been walking since about 8 months, so I was totally not prepared or properly baby proofed!
Also, I used to laugh at those things that keep the toilet seat closed….I don’t anymore, not after finding my sun splish splashing in the toilet!

But that look of accomplishment makes it worth it!

Don’tcha just love the look of pride on their face when they learn a new thing? And they practice it all the time! I remember once Rose learned to pull up we had a few nights and naps that it was hard to get her to sleep well because she kept pulling herself up in the crib. Blech!

God, she’s gorgeous. That smile is infectious!

Marin, the little girl I take care of, started walking at 9 months. She is 14 months now and climbing on couches, beds, etc. It makes me so sad! But every so often, like today, she’ll want to snuggle before nap time and it makes my week. I asked her mom to have another baby for me hahaha ;)

My love for babies could be hazardous to my future. I might end up the next Michelle Duggar– just with better fashion sense.

I love how you described this! Watching their face light up with pride as they reach another milestone is so precious.
